From the Teacher
A poem to his students at the close of first semester.

FROM THE TEACHER
It is my hope for you
amidst the down time
away from school,
your heart is lifted up,
lofted toward a greater wholeness.
It is my hope for you
amidst the seasonal scents
carols, and ringing bells,
your mind is quieted,
comforted in a refocused calm.
It is my hope for you
amidst the pomp and packaging,
hectic scurrying and wrapping
your tears come anew,
birthed in happiness, lightness and laughter.
It is my hope for you
amidst a season of celebration
your discomforts are temporary,
shaken loose by the kindness of others,
united in the warmth of a winter rejuvenation.

Rex, thank you for sharing this poem with us. Your students are so fortunate to have a teacher like you who clearly sees their humanity.
My favorite lines are these: “It is my hope for you . . . your discomforts are temporary, shaken loose by the kindness of others. . . .”
